Our awful experience with brand X gutters

I bought my first RV - a  used 32” Class A, 2000 Forest River with only 16K miles back in 2006  It was in Great shape - except for the black streaks on all four sides.  It was going to need a lot of elbow grease and cleaner to get rid of the streaks.  But what’s the point, I thought, unless I first did something about diverting the dirty water coming off the roof?

That’s when I learned about “Brand X” RV gutters. So I spent $185 for 100’.  When it arrived, I began to have my doubts - it’s water carrying capacity seemed puny - about 1/4” square.

Because it STICKS on, I knew I’d have to thoroughly clean the rubber roof first.  So I got on an 8’ ladder and started cleaning.  Turns out that I couldn’t reach over the rolled-up awning well enough, and that area wouldn’t stick at all - the whole section had to be replaced - good thing I bought lots of extra gutter.

I cut two 32’ sections from the curled-up 100’ bundle and left them in the hot sun to make them more pliable, but they stubbornly kept their curl which made them very hard to work with when my buddy arrived to help with the install - both of us on 8’ ladders struggling with this 32’ heavy, curly “snake”. The next day I realized there were LOTS of spots along the gutter that had come loose.  While the adhesive on the back of the gutter is very good, you’d better have the area VERY clean, and once you press the gutter to the roof-line, you’d better have it perfect, because re-positioning it loses most of the adhesion properties.  So I bought a half dozen tubes of “super-glue” and got busy gluing down the areas which weren’t sticking properly.

Four days into my first trip we had a thunderstorm, and my worst fears were confirmed - the water quickly overwhelmed the puny gutter and dirty water poured down the sides - starting to re-streak all my hard efforts on cleaning.

The Brand X gutter is fine for the dripping that comes from an AC unit, or morning dew, or a light drizzle - but anything like a moderate rain? - Forget It!

After sometime on the Web, I found a Plastic extrusion of just the right size and sturdiness that I needed.  They cost a LOT because I was buying such a small quantity - but at this point I just wanted something that WORKED!

I bought some brass screws - the mess with the adhesive on Brand X made me decide to use short, non-corrosive screws.  I got up on the ladder, gleefully ripped off the Brand X, and, by myself, installed what I now call SUPER-FLO gutters.

As luck would have it, the next day a thunderstorm POURED - I ran outside in the rain - getting soaked in the process - and watched the torrential rains be whisked away!  The next morning, I negotiated a quantity price with the plastic company so I could bring SUPER-FLO to you at half the price of Brand X.
